Are You a Person of Principle?

Are You a Person of Principle? By Mendy Lipsker{3:00 minutes to read}

Principle: Guiding sense of the requirements and obligations of right conduct (Dictionary.com)

Whoever knows me or deals with me knows that I’m a straight talker. I will tell the truth, even though the truth sometime hurts and people don’t want to hear it. Unfortunately, for those who like to speak the truth, there’s a price to pay for being honest and calling someone out when they do something wrong.

In many cases, people will come back later and thank you for being honest and saying the truth, even though it’s extremely painful and sometimes creates conflict. However, not saying the truth will create much greater conflict and longer lasting pain.

I really have this way of life where I try to be a person of principle, honest and straightforward. When I see someone doing something wrong, I will call them on it, whether they are my best friend or a work colleague with whom I make a lot of money.

Being a person of principle, you have to use your brains and be a light to people, at times. They know you are going to call them out on something that’s wrong, or give them advice. At the moment, they might hate you for the advice because it is not what they want to hear. They want and hope that you will say something else, because they want the truth to be formed in a certain way. Sometimes, however, the truth is not what we want it to be.

We want life to look a certain way. If everyone looks back and shines a light on how they want their personal business plan or personal career to look:

  • Life;

  • Achievements;

  • Relationships;

  • Family…

Sometimes the business plan doesn’t look so sweet or the way we want it to be. But we have to deal with life as it is. Lying to ourselves is not helping ourselves.

I really try to be truthful with myself and with the people around me. I will be straightforward and honest, but what I’m saying is coming from my heart and I mean the best for whomever I’m speaking with.

And I mean the best for myself, because being a person of principle will help me at the core to be a better person.

When you are honest and straightforward, everyone around you is going to benefit from it, including you.
