The View from The Top by Mendy LipskerGetting to the top – whether it is in your career, a social organization, or business group – is not easy. But the work doesn’t stop once you are there. Here are 6 important things to keep in mind:

1. Gratitude

Sometimes when people get comfortable or are at the top of their game, they forget those who helped them or what these individuals did in order for them to achieve their success. Sadly, when a lot of people get comfortable or achieve some success, it goes to their head. They get on their high horse and don’t think about or acknowledge the people who helped them get there. Always remember who helped you along the way. Be thankful and show your gratitude.

2. Pay it Forward

If you are successful and at the top of your game, look for ways that you can help people who need it. It’s an accepted practice in all walks of life that people give to charity, as much as 10% – 20% of their income.

Even if you didn’t make it to the top of your profession, you should still try to help others. You don’t always have to give money. One of the greatest gifts you can give to people is your time.  Volunteer, offer to give someone a ride somewhere, or just spend some time with someone. There are many ways you can help people and “pay it forward.”

3. Discipline

Even if you have made it to the top of your profession, you will need to continue the discipline that helped you become who you are and where you are. For example, people go to the gym, and after they lose the weight or have achieved their fitness goal, they must continue to do the maintenance in order to stay where they are. If you just sit back and rest on your laurels, you won’t stay at the top of your game.

4. Good and Trustworthy Friends

  • Who is really in your corner?
  • Who is really your friend?
  • Who are your team players?

When you become successful, everybody is your friend. You may start hanging out with the wrong crowd and they could bring you down. You’ve got to make sure who of your friends is faithful and who are the people you want to hang out with.

5. Humility and Respect

Always be humble and respectful to others. Maybe you got ahead of them or maybe you know the business better. Maybe you have a better technique. The bottom line is you are no better than anybody else, you may just have had more opportunity. Be humble and respectful.

6. Take Care of Yourself

Many people become so focused on their career, they forget all the other important things in life. For instance, they don’t take care of their health. Or they just forget the people who are dear to them – family members, loved ones, etc.

The view from the top can be gratifying and exhilarating, but don’t let it blind you to the things in your life that are most important.
